You can’t “register” your dealership in ChatGPT. Here’s what gets you listed instead.

You can't register your dealership in ChatGPT. Here's what gets you listed.

Short answer: There is no sign-up form, listing fee or “claim your business” button in ChatGPT. It learns about your dealership from the public web, mostly search results, your own website, review sites and directories, so the way to get listed is to make those sources say the same clear things about you.

Where ChatGPT gets dealership information

When a buyer asks ChatGPT for a dealer, it searches the web and reads what it finds. OpenAI says ChatGPT rewrites the question into one or more search queries and sends them to third-party search providers, and it names Microsoft as one of them.

Research into ChatGPT’s local answers found it leans heavily on Bing’s search results, then picks from dealer websites, review sites, directories and local guides. A separate study of 800 local business searches found 58% of the sources ChatGPT cited were the businesses’ own websites.

OpenAI also runs its own crawler, called OAI-SearchBot, that reads websites for ChatGPT search.

So ChatGPT does not have a list you can join. It has the internet. Your job is to make the internet clear about you.

The three OpenAI bots that visit your site

Your web developer should know these names. Each one does a different job:

Bot name What it does Should you allow it?
OAI-SearchBot Finds pages to show in ChatGPT search answers Yes. OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from bare navigation links.
GPTBot Collects pages to train future AI models Your choice. Blocking it does not remove you from search answers.
ChatGPT-User Opens a page when a user asks ChatGPT to look at it Yes. It only visits when a person asks.

OpenAI says robots.txt changes for search take about 24 hours to be picked up. That makes this the fastest fix on the list.

A simple robots.txt that lets ChatGPT in looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /

Sitemap: https://www.yourdealership.com/sitemap.xml

Also ask your host whether a firewall or bot filter is blocking these bots before they ever reach robots.txt. Some security services now ask site owners to decide on AI crawlers when the site is set up, and the default may not be what you want.

The 6 things that actually get you “listed”

  1. Let the AI crawlers in. Check your robots.txt file allows OAI-SearchBot, as shown above. GPTBot is optional. Some dealer sites block AI bots without the dealer knowing.
  2. Claim Bing Places and Google Business Profile. Use the exact same name, address and phone number on both, and on your website. Mismatches make AI unsure which one is right.
  3. Say what you sell, where, in plain words. Your homepage should state it in one sentence: “Used car dealer in [city] with 150 cars under $30,000 and in-house financing.”
  4. Collect reviews where AI reads them. Google, Facebook, Yelp and DealerRater. Recent reviews matter more than old ones.
  5. Publish pages that answer buyer questions. Financing with bad credit, trade-in values, what to check on a used [model]. These are the pages AI quotes.
  6. Get mentioned on other local sites. Local news, sponsorships, community pages and car guides. Every mention is one more source that confirms you exist.

Number 6 is the one dealers skip, so here are easy places to start:

  • Your inventory listings. Cars.com, CarGurus and AutoTrader in the US, or Carsales in Australia. Use the same business name and phone as your website.
  • Your local chamber of commerce or business association directory.
  • Sponsorships. A youth sports team or school fundraiser page that links to you.
  • Local press. A short story about a charity drive, a new location or 20 years in business.

You do not need hundreds. A handful of real local pages that describe you the same way beats a pile of junk directories.

Write the one paragraph AI will quote

Most dealer homepages open with a slogan. “Drive happy.” AI cannot quote that. It needs facts.

Put a short “About us” paragraph near the top of your homepage, in plain text, not inside an image. Fill in this template:

Your Dealership is an independent used car dealer at [street address], [city]. We stock about [number] cars, most priced between $[low] and $[high], with a focus on [trucks / family SUVs / first cars]. We offer [in-house financing / bank financing for all credit types], take trade-ins and buy cars for cash. Open [days and hours]. Call 555-0123.

That is roughly 60 words, and every sentence answers a buyer question: where, what, how much, can I finance, can I trade, when are you open.

Then make the same facts show up everywhere else. Your Google Business Profile description, Bing Places listing and Facebook “About” section should all say the same thing in the same words.

A 30-day plan to get found

Week Do this Time needed
1 Fix robots.txt, check your firewall, submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools 1–2 hours with your web person
2 Claim or update Google Business Profile and Bing Places; make name, address, phone and hours match your site exactly 1 hour
3 Add the “About us” paragraph; make sure every car page shows year, make, model, price and mileage as text 2–3 hours
4 Publish two answer pages, such as “Can I buy a car with bad credit in [city]?” and “How we value your trade-in” 3–4 hours

Keep one habit going after day 30: ask every buyer for a review at delivery. A text works: “Thanks for buying the 2020 Honda CR-V today. Would you share a quick review? [link]”

Proof: This works even for a brand-new website: one Brisbane dealer’s new site, launched with no history, reached 5,260 Google AI Overview impressions in its first 90 days. See the case study.

What about ChatGPT ads?

You can now pay for ads in ChatGPT. They show below the answer, clearly labeled. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, so an ad does not get you into the recommendation itself. Here is what they cost.

Watch out for “ChatGPT registration” offers

If someone offers to “register” or “submit” your dealership to ChatGPT for a fee, walk away. There is no such program. Pay for the work above, or do it yourself.

Ask any vendor one question: “What exactly will you change on my website and my listings?” If the answer is a portal, a badge or a “submission,” it is not real work.

Quick answers

Is there an official way to submit my business to ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI has no business registration or submission form for ChatGPT answers. ChatGPT finds businesses through web search and the pages it reads.

Does Google Business Profile help with ChatGPT?

Indirectly. ChatGPT reads websites and directories that repeat your business details, so keeping your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and website identical helps ChatGPT trust the information.

How long does it take for ChatGPT to start naming my dealership?

Usually weeks to a few months after your site is readable and your profiles and reviews are consistent. Check monthly with the same questions to see it change.
