Short answer: ChatGPT ads are sponsored cards below ChatGPT’s answers, shown to adults on Free and Go plans in the US, Australia and other countries; OpenAI suggests $3 to $5 click bids and a $25 minimum daily budget. They are worth a 30-day test only if clicks land on a specific inventory or trade-in page with lead tracking.
What a ChatGPT ad looks like
An ad sits below ChatGPT’s answer, marked as sponsored. It has six parts: your business name, your logo (favicon), a title, a line of copy, an image and a landing page.
Picture a buyer asking, “What are the best used SUVs under $25k near me?” ChatGPT answers with the RAV4, CR-V and CX-5. Under that answer sits your card: “120+ used SUVs in stock. Browse SUVs under $25k.” One tap and they are on your SUV page.
Three things to know before you spend a dollar:
- Only some users see ads. Adults on the Free and Go plans can see them. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not, and neither do accounts OpenAI identifies as under 18.
- Ads do not change the answer. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT’s responses. An ad is next to the answer, never in it.
- You do not buy keywords. You give “context hints” that describe the conversations you want, like “used SUVs for sale in [city]”. OpenAI says these guide matching but are not exact-match keywords.
Who you can reach, and where
ChatGPT ads launched in the US on February 9, 2026. By September 2026, OpenAI said ads were running in over 60 countries, including Australia and New Zealand.
The self-serve Ads Manager is open to businesses based in the countries on OpenAI’s availability list, which includes the US, Australia, Canada and the UK. The legal entity that pays must be based in one of those countries.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who sees ads? | Adults on Free and Go plans |
| Who never sees ads? | Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, under-18 accounts |
| Can a Free user avoid ads? | Yes, by choosing an ad-free option with lower message limits |
| Can I target my area? | Yes. Country is required; states, cities, markets and postal codes where available |
| Any topics off limits? | Ads do not show near health, mental health or politics. Car shopping is not on that list |
Paid subscribers will not see your ad at all. So a ChatGPT campaign reaches only part of the people in your area who use ChatGPT. Keep that in mind when you judge results, and do not compare its reach to Meta’s.
What it costs
| Billing | What you pay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Per click (CPC) | Start with a max bid of $3–$5 | OpenAI Help Center |
| Per 1,000 views (CPM) | About $25–$60 reported | Agency reports, 2026 |
| Conversions goal | Billed per click or per view; optimizes toward leads. No recommended bid yet | OpenAI Help Center |
| Minimum daily budget | $25 a day (A$25 in Australia) | OpenAI Help Center |
Prices move with competition. Treat these as a starting point, not a quote.
The daily budget is an average over a seven-day period, so some days spend more and some less. There is no big upfront commitment. The pilot’s large minimum was dropped when self-serve launched.
What a small test buys you
Say you run $25 a day for 30 days. That is $750.
At a $4 average click, you get about 187 visits to your SUV page. If 1 in 20 visitors sends a form, calls or texts, that is about 9 leads at roughly $83 each. Those are example numbers, not a forecast. Your real click cost and conversion rate are what the test is for.
How that compares to what dealers pay now
A click is not a lead. A $4 click still has to land on a page that turns it into a call or a form.
Proof: For comparison, our DealerDrive Meta campaigns for an Illinois dealer produced car-seller leads at $1.94 each. That is per lead, not per click. See the numbers.
So ChatGPT ads are unlikely to beat a tuned Facebook or Instagram lead campaign on cost today. Where they can win is intent: the person has just asked an AI which car to buy, what their trade is worth or who finances bad credit.
| Channel | What the buyer is doing | Best dealer use |
|---|---|---|
| Meta lead ads | Scrolling, not shopping | Volume of trade-in and “sell your car” leads |
| Google Search ads | Typing a short search | Model and “near me” searches |
| ChatGPT ads | Asking a full question, comparing options | Price-capped inventory, trade-in, financing |
What to promote first
Pick one offer that matches a question buyers actually ask ChatGPT:
- A price-capped inventory page. “SUVs under $25k in [city]” works when you really have 20 or more of them in stock.
- A trade-in value page. Someone asking “what is my 2018 Honda Accord with 90,000 miles worth” is a seller and often a buyer.
- A financing page. “Bad credit? Get pre-approved online” only if you actually offer it. Keep the copy plain and skip rate promises.
Do not advertise one car. A 2019 Ford F-150 XLT with 64,000 miles at $31,990 can sell before your ad gets reviewed. Send clicks to a filtered page that stays full.
Worth it if…
- You have fast vehicle pages or a trade-in form ready to catch the click.
- You can track what happens after the click (form fills, calls, chats). Our guide on seeing ChatGPT leads in Google Analytics covers the setup.
- You can spend $500 to $1,000 on a 2 to 4 week test without needing it to pay back immediately.
Skip it for now if…
- Your ads would send people to your homepage.
- You have no conversion tracking.
- Your Meta and Google campaigns are not working yet. Fix those first.
Mistakes that burn the budget
- Expecting the ad to get you recommended. It will not. Getting named in the answer itself is a separate job, covered in can you register your dealership in ChatGPT.
- Judging it after three days. Ads need review and a few days to settle. Give it at least 14 days.
- Counting clicks instead of leads. 200 cheap clicks with no calls is a page problem, not a win.
- Mixing paid and free ChatGPT traffic. ChatGPT already tags free referral links with
utm_source=chatgpt.com. Tag your ad links differently so you can tell them apart.
What to do next
Check whether ChatGPT already names you for free before you pay for the spot below the answer. Then pick one offer, one page and a fixed 30-day budget. Our step-by-step setup guide walks through every setting, and a short demo will show how the test would look for your store.
Quick answers
Can car dealers advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes. Businesses based in supported countries, including the US and Australia, can create campaigns in OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager. ChatGPT ads launched in the US in February 2026 and now run in over 60 countries.
Will a ChatGPT ad make ChatGPT recommend my dealership?
No. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Ads appear separately below the answer and are labeled as sponsored.
How much should a dealer test with?
A 2 to 4 week test of $500 to $1,000, sent to one specific page with conversion tracking, is enough to see click cost and lead quality. The minimum daily budget is $25.
