AI visibility

Does ChatGPT recommend your dealership? Check in 2 minutes.

Does ChatGPT recommend your dealership? Check in 2 minutes.

Short answer: Open ChatGPT in a private window, ask the five buyer questions below with your city in them, and count how many answers name your store. If it is fewer than three out of five, buyers who ask AI where to shop are being sent to someone else.

Why this matters now

Buyers used to type “used cars near me” and scroll. Now a growing number ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI a full question and get one short answer with three or four dealers in it.

If you are not in that answer, you are not in the running. There is no page two.

The good news: you can see exactly where you stand in two minutes, for free.

The 2-minute check

  1. Open a private or incognito window and go to ChatGPT. Your own chat history changes the answers, so you want a clean start.
  2. Ask the five questions below. Replace [city] with your city and [model] with a car you stock a lot of.
  3. For each answer, write down three things: Is your store named? Is there a link to your site? Is the information right (address, phone, what you sell)?
  4. Repeat in Perplexity, Gemini and Google (look at the AI Overview at the top of the results).

One detail matters here. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use an approximate location based on your IP address to give local results. So if you run the check from home, 30 miles from the lot, you may get a different list than a buyer across the street. Always put the city name in the question.

The 5 questions to ask

  • What is the best used car dealer in [city]?
  • Where can I buy a used [model] under $25,000 near [city]?
  • Which dealers in [city] offer in-house financing or work with bad credit?
  • Where can I sell my car for cash in [city]?
  • Is [your dealership name] a good place to buy a used car?

The last question is the only one with your name in it. It shows what AI says about you when someone already knows you. The first four show whether AI brings you new buyers, and those are the ones that matter most.

Pick a [model] you actually carry in depth. If you have eight Toyota RAV4s on the lot, ask about a used RAV4, not a car you see twice a year. In Australia, swap in what your buyers search for, like a used HiLux or Ranger ute.

How to score it

Named in (out of the first 4 questions) What it means
3–4 Strong. AI knows who you are and what you sell. Protect it.
1–2 At risk. You show up for some questions and lose buyers on the rest.
0 Invisible. Buyers who ask AI are being sent to your competitors.

Keep a one-page tally

Do not trust your memory. Write it down. Here is what a filled-in sheet might look like for one month:

Question ChatGPT Perplexity Gemini Google AI
Best used car dealer in [city] No Yes No Yes
Used RAV4 under $25,000 near [city] No No No Yes
In-house financing / bad credit in [city] Yes Yes No Yes
Sell my car for cash in [city] No No No No
Named (out of 4) 1 2 0 3

This example tells a clear story. Google knows the store. ChatGPT and Gemini barely do. And nobody sends sellers there, so the “sell your car” page needs work.

Run the same sheet on the first Monday of every month. Same questions, same wording. That is the only way to see if anything you changed actually moved the number.

Check the answer, not just the name

Being named is step one. Being named correctly is step two.

Look at what the AI says about you on question five. Watch for:

  • An old phone number. A buyer who calls 555-0142 and gets a dead line does not try again.
  • Wrong hours. “Closed Sundays” when you are open Sundays costs you your busiest shoppers.
  • The wrong inventory. “Specializes in luxury cars” when your average car is a $17,990 2018 Honda Civic LX sends the wrong buyer.
  • Old complaints. If the answer leans on a review from years ago, you need more recent reviews to outweigh it.

Every wrong detail came from somewhere on the web. Find where it lives and fix it there. It can take weeks for AI answers to catch up, so recheck next month.

If you are not named, it is usually one of four things

  1. Your website blocks AI crawlers. One line in a file called robots.txt can stop ChatGPT and others from reading your site at all.
  2. Your car pages are unreadable. If year, price and mileage live inside images or scripts, AI cannot see them.
  3. Your site does not answer buyer questions. AI quotes pages that answer a question in plain words. A page that only says “Browse our inventory” gives it nothing to quote.
  4. Your profiles are thin. Few reviews, an old Google Business Profile, or a different phone number on every directory makes AI less sure you are real and current.

You can test each one in about a minute:

Cause 60-second test What a pass looks like
Crawlers blocked Open yoursite.com/robots.txt No “Disallow: /” under OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or “User-agent: *”
Unreadable car pages Open a car page, press Ctrl+F, search the price The price is found as text on the page
No answers Search your site for “bad credit” or “trade-in” A real page that answers the question
Thin profiles Look up your Google Business Profile Reviews in the last 30 days, same phone as your site

On the second test: OpenAI says its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, must be allowed for your pages to show in ChatGPT search answers. And a Vercel study of AI crawler traffic found none of the major AI crawlers it tracked ran JavaScript. So if your price only appears after a script loads, many AI tools never see it.

The full list is longer. Here are 7 reasons ChatGPT skips a dealership and the fix for each.

Proof: Fixing these works. One Australian dealer’s pages were shown 264,000 times in Google’s AI answers in 90 days. See how.

Three mistakes that give you a fake good result

  • Checking while logged in. ChatGPT remembers you. Use a private window.
  • Putting your name in every question. Of course it names you then. Real buyers do not know your name yet.
  • Checking once. Answers change by day, wording and location. Check monthly and keep a simple tally.

What to do next

If you scored 3 or 4, keep checking monthly and keep your reviews coming. If you scored 0 to 2, start with the robots.txt and car-page tests above, because nothing else works until AI can read your site. Then read what actually gets you listed in ChatGPT. Quick answers

Is ChatGPT’s answer the same for everyone?

No. Answers change with the exact wording, the person’s location, their chat history and the day. That is why you check several questions in a private window and repeat it every month.

How often should a dealership check its AI visibility?

Once a month is enough to spot a trend. Keep a simple tally of how many of the same questions name your store each month.

Does it cost anything to check?

No. Asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google yourself is free. The Dealer Sales AI Visibility Audit is also free and runs 20 buyer questions for you.
