AI visibility

GEO vs AEO vs AIO vs SEO: the difference in one table.

GEO vs AEO vs AIO vs SEO. The difference in one table.

Short answer: SEO ranks you in Google’s regular results, AEO makes your page the direct answer, GEO gets you named in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers, and AIO means Google AI Overviews or AI optimization in general. They overlap so much that Google calls it all “still SEO,” so a dealer needs one plan, not four.

The four terms in one table

Read the table, then skip to the term you keep hearing about.

Term Stands for Where it shows up What you optimize How you measure
SEO Search engine optimization Google and Bing regular results, the map pack Indexed pages, titles, speed, Google Business Profile, links, reviews Rankings, clicks and calls in Search Console and GA4
AEO Answer engine optimization Featured snippets, voice answers, AI chat answers Pages that answer one buyer question in plain words, first How often your page is the quoted answer for the questions you track
GEO Generative engine optimization ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot What the web says about you: your site, reviews, directories, mentions How often AI names your store for 20 buyer questions, plus AI referral visits in GA4
AIO AI Overviews, or AI optimization Google AI Overviews and AI Mode (or all AI tools) Same as SEO: indexed, snippet-eligible, helpful pages Search Console’s Generative AI performance report

Notice the “What you optimize” column. It repeats. That is the point of this article.

These are industry labels, not official Google terms

None of these four acronyms is a Google product. They are names the marketing industry uses, and people define them differently.

  • GEO has a clear origin. It was named in a November 2023 research paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” by Aggarwal and co-authors, later presented at KDD 2024. In their tests, the methods they studied lifted a source’s visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.
  • AEO is looser. It means any work aimed at being the direct answer. Google’s own guide now names it next to GEO.
  • AIO is the messy one. Some agencies use it as short for Google’s AI Overviews. Others use it for AI optimization, meaning all AI work across Google, ChatGPT and the rest. Ask anyone who sells you “AIO” which one they mean.

Google’s position is blunt. Its guide to generative AI features says that from Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”

So skip the label debate. Worry about whether buyers find you.

SEO: the foundation the other three stand on

Every AI tool that searches the web starts from pages a search engine can find and read. If your site is weak at SEO, it is weak at everything else.

For a used car dealer, SEO comes down to five jobs:

  1. Every car has its own indexed page with year, make, model, trim, price, miles and VIN written as text, not baked into a photo.
  2. Titles say what the page is. “2019 Ford F-150 XLT 4×4, 64,000 miles, $31,990 | Your Dealership [city]” beats “Vehicle Details.”
  3. The site loads fast on a phone. Test it on yours.
  4. Your Google Business Profile is complete and your name, address and phone match everywhere. Our guide to NAP consistency for car dealers shows how to check this in an hour.
  5. Reviews keep coming in, and you answer them.

Do these and you cover most of what the other three ask for.

AEO: answer the questions buyers actually ask

AEO is about format. A buyer asks “Is a used car with 100,000 miles worth buying?” The engine wants a page that answers that in the first two sentences, then explains.

Most dealer sites have inventory, a finance form and an “About us” page. None of those answer a question.

Here is a quick test. Pick ten questions your salespeople hear every week:

  • Can I buy a car with a 550 credit score?
  • What is my trade worth if I still owe money on it?
  • Should I buy a 2018 or a 2020 CR-V?
  • What fees will I pay on top of the sticker price in [state]?

If your site has a page that answers each one in plain words, you are doing AEO. If not, that is your content plan for the next 90 days. The full playbook is in What is AEO?

GEO: get named when a buyer asks ChatGPT

GEO is about reputation more than pages. Ask ChatGPT “best used truck dealer in [city]” and the answer draws on what the web says about local dealers, not just your site.

What moves GEO for a dealer:

  • Let the AI crawlers in. If your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI says your site will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Be consistent. The same name, address, phone and hours on your site, Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, Cars.com, CarGurus and AutoTrader (or Carsales in Australia).
  • Get mentioned. Local news, sponsorships and review sites are others vouching for you.
  • Show trust on your own pages. Real staff, real photos, clear prices. Google’s term for this is E-E-A-T, and AI tools look for the same signals.
  • Consider an llms.txt file. It is a plain summary of your site for AI tools. It is cheap, but no big AI assistant has confirmed it uses one, so see our llms.txt guide before you expect much.

AIO: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

When people use AIO to mean Google’s AI Overviews, the rules are Google’s, and Google has written them down.

  • A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to be used as a supporting link.
  • There is no special markup, schema or AI text file needed. Google says so directly.
  • There is no need to chop pages into tiny chunks. Google says its systems can find the right part of a longer page.
  • You measure it in Search Console, using the Generative AI performance report.

What wins here is the same answer-first content that wins AEO, on a site that is already sound at SEO. We cover the content side in what SGE content is.

Proof: An Australian dealer reached 264,000 impressions in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in 90 days, and its top eight AI pages were all buyer’s guides. See the numbers.

One dealer plan that covers all four

You do not need four vendors or four budgets. You need one list of work, done in order.

Task SEO AEO GEO AIO
One indexed page per car, facts in text Yes Yes Yes Yes
Robots.txt allows Google, Bing and AI crawlers Yes Yes Yes Yes
Matching name, address, phone on every listing Yes Yes Yes
10 answer-first buyer’s guides Yes Yes Yes Yes
Steady flow of Google reviews, all answered Yes Yes Yes
llms.txt file Maybe No

The first five rows help everywhere. The last row maybe helps somewhere. Spend your first 90 days on the top five.

Mistakes that waste a dealer’s money

  • Paying for “GEO” and “SEO” as separate packages that do the same work twice.
  • Buying a tool that promises to “rank you in ChatGPT.” Google warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, and no tool can guarantee what ChatGPT says.
  • Publishing hundreds of thin AI-written pages. Google calls mass-produced pages made to game rankings scaled content abuse.
  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Some security plugins and CDN settings can do this.

Quick answers

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI tools that search the web start from pages search engines can find, so GEO sits on top of SEO.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO is about writing pages that answer one question clearly so they get quoted. GEO is broader: it covers everything that makes AI tools name your business, including reviews, listings and mentions on other sites.

Does AIO mean AI Overviews?

Sometimes. Some marketers use AIO for Google’s AI Overviews, and others use it for AI optimization across all tools. Ask which one a vendor means before you buy.
