Short answer: 63% of car shoppers say they will use AI on their next vehicle purchase, but only 29% of dealers have started adjusting to AI-powered search (Cox Automotive, August 2026). Buyers now build their shortlist in ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers before they visit a lot. Test what AI says about your store once a week, write down the result, and fix the gaps it shows you.
What the numbers say
In August 2026 Cox Automotive published its AI in Auto Retail Tracker, based on surveys of about 1,500 car shoppers and 500 dealers each quarter. The headline is a gap between buyers and stores.
| Finding | Share |
|---|---|
| Shoppers who will definitely or probably use AI on their next vehicle purchase | 63% |
| Shoppers who say AI helps them feel more prepared at the dealership | 24% |
| Dealers who use AI today | 82% |
| Dealers who have started adjusting to AI-powered search | 29% |
| Dealers using AI who report sales growth from it so far | 22% |
Lori Wittman, president of Retail Solutions at Cox Automotive, summed it up: AI is “changing where car shopping starts.”
Dealers use AI inside the store. Buyers use it before they arrive.
Look at how dealers use AI today. The top three uses in the Cox survey are automating tasks (40%), coordinating customer follow-up (40%) and generating content (38%). All three happen after a buyer has already found you.
Buyers use AI earlier. They ask which dealers to trust, which car fits their budget and what to ask before they walk in. By the time they call, the shortlist is made. If AI didn’t name your store, you weren’t on it.
That’s why we call AI the new car lot. It’s where buyers browse first, and it never closes.
The weekly “Ask ChatGPT” test
You can’t fix what you can’t see. Once a week, ask AI the questions a buyer in your market would ask, and record what it says. It takes about five minutes.
- Use a clean chat. Open a new chat in a private window, so your own history doesn’t shape the answer.
- Ask like a buyer. Use the five prompts below, with your city and the cars you sell.
- Check more than one AI. Run the same prompts in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. Each one pulls from different sources.
- Screen-record it. A 30-second recording is your proof, and it makes a good reel for your own page.
- Log the result. Write down whether you were named, in what position, and which website the AI cited.
Five buyer prompts to run every week
- “What’s the best used car dealer in [city]?”
- “Where can I buy a used [model] under $[budget] near [city]?”
- “Which dealers in [city] help first-time buyers with financing?”
- “Is [your dealership name] a good place to buy a car?”
- “Who will buy my car for cash in [city]?”
The fourth prompt matters as much as the others. It shows what AI tells a buyer who already knows your name, including which reviews and complaints it repeats.

Your weekly scorecard
Keep a simple log. After a few weeks it shows whether you’re moving up the list, and why.
| Week | Prompt | AI tool | Named? | Source it cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Best used car dealer in [city] | ChatGPT | No | A listing site |
| 1 | Used SUV under $25,000 near [city] | Google AI Mode | Yes, 3rd | Your vehicle page |
| 2 | Best used car dealer in [city] | ChatGPT | Yes, 4th | Your Google Business Profile |
Pay most attention to the last column. The source AI cites tells you which page or profile to improve next.
What to fix when AI doesn’t name you
| What you see | Common cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Not named at all | AI tools can’t read your website | Check that robots.txt doesn’t block AI crawlers and that pages load without a login or pop-up |
| Named, but low on the list | Fewer recent reviews than nearby dealers | Ask every buyer for a Google review within 48 hours of delivery |
| A listing site is cited instead of you | Vehicle pages show key details only in photos | Put year, price, mileage and history as text on every vehicle page |
| Wrong phone number or hours | Your details don’t match across the web | Make your Google Business Profile, website and directories match exactly |
| Named for cars you don’t stock | Few pages that answer buyer questions | Write buyer’s guides for the models you actually sell |
Most stores need two or three of these fixes, not all five. Your scorecard tells you which ones.
Measure what AI sends you
About 1 in 3 dealers using AI either don’t measure its impact or aren’t sure how they measure it, according to Cox. Start simple: in Google Analytics 4, look at visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com, and count the leads they bring. If those visits grow while your weekly scorecard improves, the work is paying off.
Proof: In the same Cox survey, dealers working with an outside AI partner were more likely to report sales or revenue growth from AI: 36%, compared with 21% of dealers without one.
Why weekly, not once
AI answers change as new reviews, pages and listings appear. One check tells you where you stand today. A weekly test shows whether you’re moving up, and catches problems, like a wrong phone number or an old complaint, before buyers act on them.
We’re running this test in U.S. markets every week and sharing what AI says, with dealer names hidden. Follow Dealer Sales on Facebook and Instagram to see each one.
Quick answers
Do car buyers really use AI to shop?
Yes. In Cox Automotive’s August 2026 tracker, 63% of shoppers said they will definitely or probably use AI on their next vehicle purchase.
Which AI tools should dealers check?
Start with ChatGPT, then Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. Each one uses different sources, so a store can be named in one and missing from another.
Can I pay to be named in ChatGPT’s answers?
No. Where ChatGPT shows ads, they appear separately from the answer and are labeled. Being named in the answer itself comes from your website, reviews and listings.
How long until AI starts naming my store?
It depends on the fix and the AI tool. That’s why the weekly log matters: it shows you when a change starts to work.
Does the weekly test cost anything?
No. All you need is a browser and five minutes. If you’d rather we did it, we’ll run 20 buyer questions for your market and send you a free score.
